Summer Camp Program Emergency Information

Safety is our top priority

The Cornhusker Council’s top priority is the safety of our Scouts. Our camps constantly monitor the weather and take precautions if severe weather is anticipated. Weather is tracked through local television news outlets, the Sheriff’s Department, the Internet, as well as a radio weather service.

Adult leaders are oriented in emergency procedures at the beginning of each camp session and written procedures are posted in each campsite and major area of camp. Our camp facilities are modern and an emergency siren is audible throughout each camp property. A storm shelter is available at the Outdoor Education Center and we utilize pre-determined low lying areas at Camp Cornhusker.

We train our camp staff at the beginning of each summer on severe weather procedures. In case of an emergency, camp staff are sent to each campsite or program area to instruct leaders to move their Scouts to the appropriate area. A headcount for each unit is taken and reported to a central command of information. If we have implemented severe weather procedures, the whereabouts of each Scout in camp is monitored.
